BMW, the Germany-based luxury car manufacturer, has launched the Z4 Roadster, a sports-car, which comes at an ex-showroom cost of Rs 59 lakh in Mumbai.
Z4, a two-seater, comes with 2,979 cc petrol engine and is an attempt by BMW to leave its imprint in Indian luxury car segment.
"With the new BMW Z4 we want to reach out to new target groups in India who appreciate a pure driving experience, high standard of elegance and value, and suitability for everyday driving and comfort," BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said.
He added that BMW has plans for selling 30-40 units of Z4 Roadster in the first year.
BMW and Mercedes-Benz are in a stiff competition for the top slot in the Indian luxury-car market, with BMW reporting sales of 2,305 units from January to August 2009, whereas Mercedes has sold 2,026 units during the same period.
He had mentioned earlier that BMW has plans for selling about 3,000 units by end of this year, with about 75% of the target from the 3-Series and 5-Series, which are assembled at the Chennai plant of the firm.
BMW also has the 6-Series and 7-Series for the luxury segment with X3, X5 and X6 in sports and the M3, M5 and M6 in the convertible sports coupe category.
