‘Peepli Live’ Gives Complex To Big Releases
It was a pre assumption that ‘Peepli Live’ is going to be a hit, but it was least thought that this 10 crore meager budget film will break the records and will even get such huge overseas response also.

Now just have a look at the figures, ‘Peepli’ earned 21 crore in its opening week, with 109 overseas prints it grossed $6,40,000 ( 2.88 crore) abroad. Apparently its amount is even bigger than some bigger recent films like ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’.

The main reason for saying that ‘Peepli’ is able to break new grounds is that it doesn’t have a big star cast like ‘Raavan’ and ‘Kites’, but even then it was able to achieve it.

The movie released on 64 prints in the US and did around $3,64,000 in the opening weekend. The film also released in the Middle East on the occasion of Ramzaan and opened at $1,75,000 on 18 prints.

South Africa, Pakistan, Singapore, Benelux and Kenya contributed to about $59,000 in the opening weekend, which is even bigger than the amount generated by popular star cast films. Even it has the new name of Director Anusha Rizvi attached to it, which worked miraculously.

When small budget films like ‘Udaan’, ‘Aamir’, ‘A Wednesday’, ‘Khosla ka Ghosla’, ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ etc couldn’t achieve such good results but ‘Peepli’ being in the same line even gave complex to big films.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO UTV Motion adds, “Audiences in the US come to the theatres only if it has big stars like Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan. We decided to focus on Amir as a brand to promote the film.”

He further adds, “The big comfort is in knowing that a good movie will be watched. With this, smaller films will also get a boost. The challenge for us now is to figure out how to make it happen even without an equivalent of an Aamir in every small film.”

The last smashing hit ‘Rajneeti’ had a budget of around 40-45 crore, now Aamir’s fourth production house movie is doing wonders not only in India, but abroad also.
