Nokia Netbook |
Reports have confirmed Nokia has ordered its first batch of Netbooks and Smartbooks from Taiwanese manufacturers Quanta Computer Inc. and Compal Electronics Inc. respectively.
The Netbook will be based on the Intel Atom processor and the Smartbook will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPU.
It also recently announced its partnership with Intel to develop an open standard for a new mobile computing platform built on Linux based OS.
Nokia plans to sell both, the Netbook and the Smartbook through wireless service carriers that currently sell Nokia phones.
For the uninitiated, Nokia is not new to the computer business. In the eighties the Finnish giant used to sell a personal computer known as MikroMikko. It sold the business to International Computers Limited (ICL) in 1991. Also, Nokia used to manufacture computer monitors in the nineties. It sold the monitor making business to ViewSonic, a leading monitor manufacturer, in 2000.
The Netbook and Smartbook will hit the market in the third quarter of 2009.
