Mango To Be Named After Kylie Minogue? Kylie Minogue |
Australian singer Kylie Minogue has been shortlisted to have a special variety of mango named after her. The pop princess could record her name in the history as the three new varieties of mango have been developed under the National Mango Breeding and Primary Industry Minister Kon Vatskalis has proposed to name one of them after Kylie.
Kon Vatskalis was quoted as saying, "I think Kylie should be so lucky to have this mango variety named after her.”
He added, "She is the princess of pop and just like royalty it would be fitting to have a Territory icon named after her. I am even going to send Ms Minogue a batch of these mangoes to get her to be one of the first in Australia to try this new variety."
Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland and the CSIRO teamed up to develop the new varieties of mango.
"These three varieties of mango will hopefully give producers a new product for the domestic and export markets, while consumers will benefit from an improvement in the quality of fruit", Mr Vatskalis said.
"The mangoes under trial retain the sweet rich Kensington Pride taste, but are highly coloured with greater external blush, making them more appealing to consumers."
Kon Vatskalis also added that the new range of mangoes will hit the markets by 2012.
