Aanchal Dogra, the 25-year-old girl from Toronto, took home the Miss India-Canada 2009 title, in an event that happened in Toronto on Saturday night. This is largest of the South Asian beauty pageants which are conducted in North America.
Aanchal Dogra, who comes from Mississauga, that is located on the outskirts of Toronto, was the eldest of all the contestants. There were 16 Indian-Canadian girls who were eyeing the title. "I cannot believe that I will be the winner of this beauty pageant," said Aanchal Dogra who holds an MD in alternative medicines.
Aanchal Dogra will now join the league of Lisa Ray, Komal Sidhu and Ruby Bhatia, who are now famous in the world of entertainments and Bollywood.
Komal Sharma, 20, from Montreal, and Guneet Marwah, 21, from Richmond Hill, which is located near Toronto were the runners-up at the 19th edition of the Indian beauty contest.
Hollywood actor-singer Karen David crowned the pageant winners. She also gave the audience a musical treat with her favourite number.
Karen David was born in Shillong, raised in Toronto and trained in London. Karen David has essayed the lead role in Hollywood film 'Scorpion King 2' and 'Provoked'. She has also crooned for compositions by A.R. Rehman and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The evening show, which went on for three hours, started with all the girls flaunting their desi stuff.
The event kicked off with the hit Bollywood song 'Main Desi Girl' from ‘Dostana’. All the16 contestants showed off their desi skills in front of the huge audience, right from bhangra to hit Bollywood numbers to bhajans.
After the final quiz from the judging panel, Aanchal Dogra as declared the winner with Komal Sharma and Guneet Marwah being announced the runners-up.
This will endow Aanchal Dogra with a free India visit and spend time in Mumbai.
