Bollywood seems relentlessly to go with further experiments with such handicap character in much colorful and realistic way, apart from common characters.
In this upcoming film ‘My Name is Khan’ Shah Rukh plays of a person name Rizwan Khan, a man with Asperger syndrome, mistaken to be a terrorist while travelling in US. It is a film under Dharma Productions and Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, directed by Karan Johar.
The concept is beautifully researched before giving it a lively role upon a person suffering asperger syndrome. It is a kind of autism and making a person difficult to interact with people. A person tends to remain restricted to certain interest and his patterns of behaviour and interests remain repetitively same.
Johar saluted to the actors mind blowing performance and stated "Shah Rukh has done monumental research on his autistic character. I was zapped by how much he knew on the subject. And he brought all the knowledge on the sets. He had written reams of notes on how he wanted to interpret his character,"
Such challenging role was played previously by Anil Kapoor, who won lots of accolade and critical acclamation for playing a 'mentally slow' man in 'Eeshwar' (1989) directed by K. Vishwanath's. Eswar film was about a about fully grown man but mentally unstable and behaves like a child. But he had a gifted voice by what he start making his earning. He marries a widow having a kid, who later enables him to take up his marriage responsibilities and matures him.
'Yuvvraaj', 2008, by Subhash Ghai, was also an impressive act by Anil Kapoor, who depicted the character of a person suffering autism, who was a musical genius.
Rakesh Roshan's ‘Koi...Mil Gaya’, had such one character played by the lead actor, the Bollywood’s heartthrob Hrithik Roshan. Fittingly did justice to the character, lovably it was an unique performance remembered in the industry. As stated by Hrithik "My character Rohit isn't autistic. He's born with a deficient part in his brain. He's mentally 10 years behind other people his age.”
His character was of a young man who tries to carry his father’s scientific research by communicating with extra terrestrials from outer space.
The star stated "Unlike other actors playing mentally challenged characters, I had to make Rohit look smart. He's always playing pranks on guys twice his age and size,"
Even Indian screen diva like Sridevi, who in 1983 did a remarkable award winning performance in 'Sadma' portraying the character of a young woman who retreats to childhish behavior after suffering a head injury in a car crash.
Stunning Dia Mirza, also did a fair challenging role of a mentally retarded girl Nazeen in Khalid Mohammad's 'Tehzeeb'.
