Famous Indian painter Tyeb Mehta passed away on Thursday due to a cardiac ailment at a hospital in Mumbai. He was 84.
Sakina Mehta, the widow of the late painter, told that the artist succumbed to heart attack at the Asian Heart Institute hospital in Mumbai. The Padma Bhushan award winner had been ill for the past two years.
At a Christie's auction during June 2008, one of his works fetched him his highest-ever price of $2 million.
Mehta's canvas "Kali" fetched Rs.10 million in 2005, and his "Celebration" went for Rs.15 million in 2002.
He received the Padma Bhushan in 2007.
