Princess Diana’s Iconic Black Dress Fetches 192,000 Pounds Princess Diana |
The sexy strapless silk black taffeta dress which changed Lady Diana Spencer to fashion icon Princess Diana has fetched 192,000 pounds, nearly four times higher than estimated at a recent auction.
The Princess of millions of hearts donned the low-cut black outfit at her first public engagement with the Prince of Wales in 1981.
The symbolic gown was the part of a collection of clothes being sold by designers Elizabeth Emanuel and David Emanuel.
The dress has been bought by a fashion museum in Chile, the Fundacion Museo de la Moda,
The dress created a huge outrage in 1981 in England for its deep neckline. The story behind the iconic gown is that, the weeks after her engagement, Diana lost much weight and returned the dress to the designers to be altered. But the alterations were so drastic they thought it better to re-make a new version for her.
Auctioneer Kerry Taylor quoted, "They kept the original and forgot about it - only re-discovering it quite recently. It was rumoured that the Princess had destroyed the black dress. It was sold together with an original copy of the invoice, fashion sketches and contemporary photographs of her wearing it."
