James Cameron’s Avatar has sparked controversy in Italy after landing an unrestricted access rating - allowing kids of any age to watch the hi-tech adventure.

The film, already the second highest-grossing picture of all time, was given a PG-13 rating in many countries, because it includes intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking".

But ‘Avatar’ was released in Italy on Friday (15Jan10) without any warning for parents, prompting outrage among campaign groups.

Italian children's advocacy organization AGE and parent's group Moige have argued the film’s rating should be increased.

A Moige spokesperson says Italy’s rating system represents a discrimination against the protection of Italian children," while AGE bosses are pushing for the country to adopt a system closer to the U.S.

This isn't the first time ‘Avatar’ has attracted criticism - a Vatican's newspaper has blasted the film for promoting the worship of nature.
