Nirupama Rao, who has been assigned with the new designation of being India’s foreign Secretary, will assume her charge today. She has served as ambassador to China and spokesperson of the foreign ministry
Rao is the second woman foreign secretary of India, the first being Chokila Iyer, who served briefly in the post in 2001.
Nirupama Rao is taking over Shivshankara Menon, who ended his nearly three-year tenure as India's top diplomat yesterday.
Menon will now be in Prime Minister's Office as prime minister's special ambassador for the neighbourhood.
