Hundreds of Lena Horne fans paid their last tribute to the actress & singer on Friday who died on 9th May 2010. She was 92.
Lena Horne was the first black movie star to rule Hollywood for a longer period of time.
Celebrities like, Soprano Jessye Norman, actress Vanessa Williams and singer Dionne Warwick, were present at the funeral which took place in a church on the Upper East Side of New York. The dear friends of the late actress described her as a pioneer who paved the way for many black people.
In the early 1940s, Horne starred in MGM musicals such as ‘Cabin in the Sky’, ‘Stormy Weather’ and ‘Ziegfeld Follies’.
In 1947, she secretly married Lennie Hayton, a white conductor and pianist.
In 1995, she won a Grammy for best jazz vocal performance for ‘An Evening with Lena Horne’.
