Advanced Technology Vehicle From ISRO Successfully Tested ISRO's ATV |
In a major boost to the space program, ISRO has successfully tested its Advanced Technology Vehicle which will one day carry Indians to outer space. According to an ISRO press release, the rocket successfully flew at a velocity of more than Mach 6 for seven seconds. “The successful flight-testing is a step ahead towards the advanced technology initiative from the ISRO in the area of air-breathing propulsion.
Weighing in at three tonnes at lift-off, the ATV-D01 carries a passive scramjet engine. This is different from conventional rockets as the scramjet makes use of air in the fuel mixture. This air breathing system obviates the need to carry oxygen on board as is the case with most other rockets. This way, the rocket is much lighter and far more efficient than its conventional counterpart.
